Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config as root.

  • Change the port (default is 22)
  • Change “PermitRootLogin yes” to “PermitRootLogin no”
  • AddUser username
  • save and quit
  • restart the ssh server: sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart
